It’s August. You’re on the North Coast, and you’ve just had a long day at the beach. You’re later attending a party everyone swears is gonna be better than the last. Somehow your weekend plans already include three beach days, four parties, and at least one event you forgot you agreed to. The second you step out of the car, everyone’s calling dibs on the first shower, and every flat surface in the house has become someone’s makeup station.
Your friends are passing around bronzer, fighting over the only mirror with decent lighting, and taking turns plugging in the hair straightener while the playlist gets progressively louder. In two hours, you’ll all be pretending you effortlessly look like this.
Unfortunately, Egyptian summer tends to be unforgiving. It doesn’t care about your contour, your cat eye, or the forty-five minutes you spent on your face before leaving the house. By hour two, the Sahel humidity wants all of it back. The good news: melting isn’t inevitable. It’s just a skill issue.
SKIN PREP
Dehydrated skin grabs onto nothing. Before any makeup goes on, load up on a thicker moisturizer than you’d normally reach for. Give it 15 to 30 minutes to sink in before you start your makeup application.
MAKEUP BASE
This is not a step you’re gonna wanna skip. A gripping primer: Milk Makeup, One Size, e.l.f. Cosmetics, or Danessa Myricks‘ blurring balm, gives everything applied after it something to hold onto.
SETTING SPRAY IS NOT A FINAL STEP
Most people save setting spray for the very end. Wrong move. Mist between steps, not just after. A layer of Charlotte Tilbury or e.l.f. Cosmetics between layers locks each stage in before the next one gets a chance to slide off.
FOCUS YOUR POWDER WHERE YOU SWEAT
Focus on your actual hot spots, T-zone, hairline, wherever your face gives up first. Press loose setting powder in with a puff instead of swiping it. Pressing builds up product. Swiping just moves things around.
SWITCH YOUR MASCARA
Regular mascara and heat do not coexist in peace. Tubing mascara, Tarte’s is the best one, wraps each lash instead of coating it, which means it slides off clean with warm water instead of melting under your eyes by 11pm.
DRINK UP
If you sweat, drinking ice water while you’re applying your makeup is gonna take you a long way. Cooling down from the inside buys you time your primer can’t.
SEAL IT, TWICE
Once everything’s on, melt it together with a spritz of Mac Fix+, then, only for nights when you really need the extra seal, lock it down with One Size On ‘Til Dawn or L’Oréal Infallible for the stretch of the night that actually matters.
DON’T FORGET THE LIPS
Line with a lip stain before you reach for your liner. That way, when the liner fades, and it will, there’s still color underneath. Dust the liner with translucent powder before you apply anything else. It buys hours.
