The Summer That Turned Us Back To Wattpad Girlies

Those 3 am secretly kicking our feet readers are so back

For three summers straight, The Summer I Turned Pretty was less of a TV show and more of an annual summer ritual. Each season drop meant TikTok edits on loop, group chats resurrecting the same Team Connie vs. Team Jere debate, and a collective reliving of girlhood summers we thought we’d outgrown. Now, that the series has come to an end, we’re left with the bittersweet silence of the end.

But this was never just about a girl in a love triangle at a beach house, it was about us — the Wattpad girlies who once stayed up until 3 am reading about moody bad boys, clumsy heroines, the Y/N stories and who found themselves, unexpectedly, pulled back into that world. Because if TSITP did anything, it reminded us that we never really left Wattpad behind.

WHY IT HOOKED US (AGAIN)

The show leaned into every trope that once defined our teenage imagination: the golden retriever boy who says everything you would want to hear, the brooding boy who says nothing but feels everything, and the girl caught between them. Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah weren’t just characters, they were archetypes we’d met a hundred times in Wattpad fanfics, only this time, they had Taylor Swift soundtracking their heartbreak.

And that was the genius. It wasn’t ashamed of cliché, it embraced it. It reminded us why clichés work, because they’re comforting, dramatic, and deeply familiar. Seeing them play out with whispered dialogue was like slipping into an emotional muscle memory we didn’t know we still had.

NOSTALGIA FOR GIRLHOOD

It wasn’t just the love triangle, it was the way it tapped into nostalgia. Teenagers watched it as goals, imagining what first love could feel like. Adults watched it like a memory, remembering the intensity of crushes that felt like destiny or for the singletons, how they hoped to feel again.

Even the way we consumed the show felt nostalgic. Bingeing a new season the second it dropped resembled the exact way we once devoured 50 or more chapter Wattpad stories late at night. We laughed at ourselves, sure, but we also felt that same ache, that same swoon. It wasn’t just TV, it was time travel.

THE ENDING WE GOT

After all the push and pull the war is finally over, *SPOILER ALERT* Belly chose Conrad. And of course she did, he was the Wattpad ending all along; The broody boy who hurt her, confused her, but who she couldn’t stop loving. That decision didn’t come easy, while Jeremiah was labelled as irresponsible and a manchild, he also was stable, endlessly kind and convenient. He was the “safe choice,” the boy who told her exactly what she meant to him. But love was never about safety, it was about longing and longing, as every Wattpad reader knows, rarely leads to the easy option.

By choosing Conrad, Belly didn’t just pick a boy, she picked the part of herself that refused to settle for less than the love that haunted her. It was frustrating, messy, and entirely human. The ending wasn’t about neat resolution, it was about passion, and that’s why it felt right.

DOES THAT MEAN THE RETURN OF WATTPAD GIRLIES?

For years, Wattpad culture was something we joked about: “the bad boy CEO who falls for the clumsy intern,” “the boy from the famous boy band that picked the girl amidst the crowd.” But when Belly walked back into Conrad’s arms, we remembered why we ever cared about these tropes. They weren’t about realism, they were about feeding into longing.

In a cultural moment that prizes irony and detachment, the show gave us permission to yearn again. To root for a love triangle with our whole chest, to ugly cry over sudden confessions and stolen glances. To admit that, deep down, we still crave the melodrama of believing love can change everything. Because the truth is, Wattpad girls secretly want those stories to happen to us in real life. We want permission to feel that much, to ache that much, to love that much. And this show gave us exactly that.

WHAT IT LEAVES US WITH

Now that the series has ended, what remains isn’t just Belly’s story, it’s ours. We were reminded that softness isn’t weakness, that drama isn’t silly, and that sometimes choosing passion over logic is its own kind of growing up. For a few hours each summer, we weren’t detached, serious adults, we were Wattpad girlies again, living for the ache of first love, swooning over a line of poetic dialogue, and believing in the possibility of being chosen. But don’t fret, turns out a movie adaptation is in the cards, so until then revert back to late night readings.

We leave you with this: The summer didn’t just turn Belly pretty, it turned us back into believers of love and that’s the real happily ever after.
