Despite September rolling around, the summer heat is far from cooling down. While we still have a few months before we start reaching for the knits and coats, fall has begun to slowly seep into our minds – and there is no better time to start revamping your wardrobe in preparation.
The easiest place to begin is with a classic piece that smoothly transitions into the cooler months: the skirt.
This year, the skirt has become the outfit, and fall is no exception. Instead of serving as just another piece of the puzzle, it has emerged as the core element around which an entire look is built. The styling follows its lead: tops are pared back, layers become more considered and accessories are chosen to complement rather than compete.
The season’s selection is broad enough to suit almost every kind of dresser. Familiar wardrobe staples return with sharper silhouettes, while checks, texture and exaggerated proportions offer something slightly more experimental. CHECKS, PLEASE
Checks return almost every fall, yet this season they feel decidedly less predictable. Rather than the stiff pleated minis typically associated with the print, we are seeing chiffon maxis, fluid A-line shapes and textured midis that give the pattern room to move.
This is also one of the easiest trends to start wearing while temperatures remain high. Pair yours with a basic white tee now, before throwing on an olive-green or tomato-red chunky knit once the weather finally begins to turn. The print does most of the work, leaving little need for complicated styling.
BACK TO BLACK
Few pieces work harder than the classic black pencil skirt. Once reserved for rigid office wardrobes, the ’90s heritage piece has returned with far more flexibility – and considerably less corporate baggage.
A crisp shirt and kitten heels can carry it through the working day, while a fitted tee, leather jacket or slightly sheer top takes it out for a late-night bite with your girlfriends. MAKE A STATEMENT
This fall, the statement skirt is no longer being saved for special occasions. Sheer midis, sequinned surfaces and iridescent knee-grazers are slipping into everyday wardrobes, often paired with pieces as simple as crisp white shirts or lightweight knits.
Prints are becoming bolder too, with acid-washed finishes, abstract motifs and saturated colours bringing a little disorder to otherwise polished looks. Red continues to lead the movement, offering an immediate way to make even the simplest outfit feel intentional. The trick is to allow the skirt to remain the loudest part of the look.
TEXTURE TAKES OVER
Pleats, asymmetrical cuts, crinkled cotton, lace and fringe are lining the rails this season. We are leaning into anything with texture and movement, yet the result never feels messy. Silhouettes remain structured and sleek, creating interest without overwhelming the wearer.

There is something playful about the shape, yet its new proportions feel far more grown-up. Rather than sitting stiffly away from the body, fall’s versions use softer fabrics and controlled volume to create an exaggerated hem without swallowing the rest of the look. Keep the top half streamlined and let the skirt’s sculptural shape take centre stage.
GO TO GREAT LENGTHS
The maxi skirt has officially reached the floor. This season’s lengths are deliberately dramatic, grazing shoes and pooling ever so slightly at the ankle. For those on the shorter side, it may finally be worth embracing the extra fabric rather than immediately sending every new purchase to the tailor.
The silhouette has shifted too. Summer’s breezy, casual maxis are giving way to sleeker versions that skim the body before falling cleanly towards the ground. Satin, velvet and fine knits add to the drama, while dark, uninterrupted colours make the shape feel polished rather than heavy.
Worn with a fitted top now or layered beneath a blazer and knit later, the floor-grazing maxi may be the clearest sign that the skirt is no longer simply completing the outfit. It has become the entire point.
