With a culture as deep and rich as Egypt’s, it is only natural that we be inspired by it for centuries upon centuries. From fashion to decor, ancient Egyptian art and culture have acted as the building blocks for a myriad of artistic endeavors.

Drawing inspiration from her Egyptian heritage, Abeer Al Otaiba, the visionary founder behind SemSem, presents her latest collection: the Autumn/Winter 2024 collection.

THE DIVINE FEMININE

The SemSem AW24 collection pays homage to the divine feminine, drawing inspiration from the pharaohs of ancient Egypt. Each gown is a testament to the opulence and grandeur of Egyptian mythology. The collection features an array of different designs, from the Cleopatra Dress to the Sunray Metallic Liquid Lamé Dress.

Al Otaiba’s designs reflect the timeless allure of Egypt, stitching together timeless pieces that reflect its opulence. SemSem’s last collection aims to empower women from all walks of life, each garment meticulously crafted and infused with majesty. The collection showcases a blend of eveningwear and ready-to-wear looks, meticulously embellished using a range of couture techniques.

A standout feature of this collection is the introduction of chain detailing on select dresses, where rope-like heavy chains create fluidity and movement, adding an exquisite touch of glamour while accentuating the garment’s silhouette.

FROM ALEXANDRIA TO VIRGINIA

SemSem’s Founder and Creative Director Abeer Al Otaiba is a mother of two and the wife of the UAE Ambassador to the United States. She grew up in Alexandria, Egypt, and pursued a career in civil engineering in Dubai before relocating to Virginia.

The brand consistently evokes East and West sensibilities drawn from Al Otaiba’s multicultural upbringing. And while civil engineering and fashion may seem worlds apart, her inclination towards precise designs, unparalleled quality, and functionality marry well with her lifelong love for fashion.

SemSem, taken after the founder’s first daughter Samia’s nickname, has been worn by both celebrity mothers and young women like Blake Lively, Taylor Swift, Kourtney Kardashian, Jamie King, and Saoirse Ronan.
