Egypt is quietly but firmly asserting its place on the international fashion scene as the industry’s borders change.

The nation is now home to a new generation of innovative creatives who are reinventing what it means to create, manufacture, and establish a brand that has both local origins and international significance. It is no longer only a source of high-quality cotton.

This month’s ELLE Picks feature two stylish brands that are designed to travel, both in terms of wearability and philosophy.

One business sells slow-luxury loungewear and home goods that are woven along the Nile and designed in London; the other is a ready-to-wear powerhouse founded on spontaneity, happiness, and unreserved expression.

N.A STUDIO: SUMMER BY THE SEA

In a fashion landscape often obsessed with precision and polish, N.A STUDIO dares to be different. Founded by Libyan sisters Noran and Soad Ageel, the ready-to-wear brand strives to present a Mediterranean visual language: bright, artistic, and subtly rebellious.

With the sensibility of an artist and the heart of a storyteller,  N.A. STUDIO creates everything from bold stripes and clashing hues to sensual tailoring and nostalgic crochet.

One concept served as the foundation for the brand: fashion should be experienced rather than merely observed. The creators claim that personality has always been more important to them than polish. “We want to dress the kind of woman who isn’t afraid to be remembered, who leads with instinct, and who lives in color.”

For Spring/Summer 2025, their campaign Summer by the Sea was shot in Tunisia, a setting that holds deep emotional resonance. Framed by sun-washed courtyards, cerulean skies, and the timeless charm of North African architecture, the collection comes to life through silhouettes that feel simultaneously sculptural and soft.

The hero print of the season, SIDI, draws inspiration from the iconic blue tones of Sidi Bou Saïd, a stripe motif that evokes tradition and serenity, reinterpreted with graphic precision.

Standouts include a crisp button-down, an oversized poplin shirt with attitude, and a linen suit tailored with ease. Yet the soul of the collection lives in the tension between contrasts: structure and softness, heritage and now, artistry and everyday wearability.

A hand-crocheted piece might feel like something passed down, only rendered in a contemporary silhouette and palette that feels fresh, bold, and fashion-forward.

“We always return to touch,” say the Ageel sisters. “We love to include a handmade element in every collection, it’s our way of weaving memory into each piece.” In a world of hyper-digitized fast fashion, their commitment to craftsmanship feels radical, even rebellious.

Furthermore, even if the designs are striking, they are never performative. N.A. STUDIO speaks to a woman who dresses for emotional expression rather than attention, someone with a stylist’s intuition and a collector’s eye. These garments are designed to be worn, felt, and shared.

From Cairo’s souks to international fashion hubs, N.A. STUDIO is demonstrating that North African design has a voice that is rich in story, powerful in silhouette, and always grounded in character.

HOUSE BABYLON: THE BEIRUT COLLECTION

House Babylon is a silent disruptor in a world full of exaggerated thread counts and expensive luxury. The brand, which was created in London and made in Egypt, focuses on high-quality, ethically sourced Egyptian cotton that has been transformed into loungewear, bathrobes, towels, bed linens, and other sophisticated household necessities.

The basic tenet of House Babylon is to buy better, buy less. The company only uses long-staple Egyptian cotton, which is valued for its remarkable softness and durability, and is farmed along the Nile River.

Each piece is carefully chosen, spun, and woven to produce a texture that only softens with wear. The end effect is tactile luxury that is sincere, practical, and long-lasting.

The goal of House Babylon is aptly stated by its founder, Mariam Elshafie: “We founded House Babylon because we believe luxury should not be elusive or exclusive. Our objective is to provide a targeted, exquisitely designed collection without the markup, thereby streamlining a perplexing retail experience.”

House Babylon’s creative focus for Spring/Summer 2025 is Beirut, a city whose contradictions and contrasts have long served as an inspiration to poets, artists, and designers.

The brand pays a moving homage to the city’s timeless beauty, resiliency, and character with The Beirut Collection.

“Beirut is a city of movement and memory, grace and grit,” says Mariam Elshafie, Creative Director. “This collection honors the everyday poetry of life there, its textures, its architecture, its light,” the statement reads, avoiding romanticizing the past.

The capsule captures a sense of location in works that are poetic and intimate, drawing inspiration from the Albergo Hotel’s patterned tile floors, sun-faded linen curtains that swing from wrought iron balconies, and the meditative hum of leisurely summer days.

Breathable cotton loungewear sets made of lightweight poplin evoke the carefree elegance of rooftop gardens and private salons in Beirut.

Hand-poured and rich in symbolism, the sculptured Trio Cone Candles capture the sensory duality of a city situated between mountain and sea. They are scented with warm notes of Patchouli, Clove, and Bergamot, echoing the conical silhouette of the Labbadeh, a traditional Lebanese felt cap.

Striped tote bags modeled by balcony curtains complete the edit; they are timeless, nostalgic, and made to transition well between city walks and beach getaways.

The collection, which will be available online and in a few select stores starting on June 15, 2025, is more than just a seasonal release; it’s a narrative woven within memory, cotton, and wax.

According to Elshafie, “this isn’t just a design project.” “It’s a respectful homage to a city that, despite adversity, never stops producing beauty.”

MADE IN THE MIDDLE EAST. LOVED WORLDWIDE

N.A. STUDIO and House Babylon both demonstrate what happens when companies combine craft and clarity, positioning slow fashion as a sustained dedication to integrity, beauty, and global relevance rather than a passing fad.

These labels encourage you to make unique choices, whether you’re clothing your body or your house.

Additionally, each stitch, thread, and stripe serves as a reminder that fashion is a narrative.
