To mark 60 years since Gucci’s official introduction in Japan in 1964, the House is hosting a series of events, emphasizing its deep bond with the Japanese people.
A highlight is the new exhibition Bamboo 1947: Then and Now at the Gucci Ginza Gallery in Tokyo, running from August 2 to September 23.
THE BAMBOO 1947 EXHIBITION
This exhibition will feature 60 vintage Gucci Bamboo 1947 bags, predominantly from the 80s and 90s, revitalized by renowned Japanese artisans and contemporary artists.
Each bag will be reimagined, showcasing themes of discovery and upcycling, underlining Gucci’s commitment to tradition and innovation.
Launched in 1947, the Bamboo 1947 bag quickly became synonymous with Gucci’s pioneering craftsmanship. Over the years, each of Gucci’s creative directors has reinterpreted this iconic piece, bridging past and present while celebrating its timeless elegance.
The exhibition includes work from the goldsmith and Living National Treasure Morihito Katsura and his pupil Naoko Ai, ceramist Nakazato Hirotsune, lacquerer Ai Tokeshi, photographer Daido Moriyama, and painters Nami Yokoyama and Yui Yaegashi.
Each artisan will add their unique touch to the Bamboo 1947 bags, highlighting the exquisite craftsmanship and enduring beauty of the style.
