Breathe, Don’t Rush

This is a small reminder that the word “perfect” is a subjective one..

Breathe

“Am I too late?”
It’s a question we’ve all asked ourselves at some point. In a world where perfectionism is often idealized, it’s easy to feel like you’re falling behind. Platforms like TikTok and Instagram flood our feeds with curated snapshots of what should be—advice on what we should have, what we should do, and what we should look like. Influencers tell us what’s “in,” what’s “trendy,” and what’s “successful.” But who decided that we’re obligated to meet these expectations? Who said our worth is defined by what we achieve, what we possess, or how closely we mirror someone else’s life? The truth is, we are all on our own unique journey, and there is no single, right way to live it.
Here’s a reminder: Breathe. Don’t rush.

LIFE IS NOT A CHECKLIST TO FILL

We are not born with a set of predetermined goals and obligations. The idea that we must achieve certain milestones by specific ages is a construct imposed by societal pressures—not universal truths. You don’t have to travel the world before you turn 30. You don’t have to be a millionaire by 30. You don’t need to have had a relationship before college or follow any timeline other than your own.
What’s often overlooked is that these so-called “deadlines” are set by people who live different lives, have different circumstances, and follow different paths. Just because someone else seems to be ahead doesn’t mean you are behind. Your journey is yours alone—and it’s okay to take your time.

YOU’RE NOT LATE, YOU’RE JUST ON TIME

It’s easy to feel like you’re falling short if you haven’t secured your dream job at 24 or haven’t gotten married by 28. But the reality is, these pressures are largely a byproduct of the virtual world we inhabit. If we didn’t have social media to constantly compare ourselves to, we might not even notice that we’re “behind.” Instead, we’d be able to enjoy our own path, without the weight of external expectations pushing us toward someone else’s idea of success.
So, remember: You are not late. You are simply living life on your own timeline.

THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON MENTAL HEALTH AND CONSUMER BEHAVIOR

The pressure to live up to a curated, seemingly perfect life on social media has become a significant factor contributing to the rise of anxiety, depression, and general dissatisfaction. A study conducted by the American Psychological Association (2017) found that 90% of young adults reported social media contributing to feelings of inadequacy, with 60% feeling pressured to maintain an idealized version of themselves online. The constant comparison to others on platforms like Instagram and TikTok can lead to what psychologists refer to as “social comparison theory,” where people measure their own worth by the standards they see online. These curated, often filtered images of success, happiness, and wealth are not only unattainable for most, but they also leave many questioning their own self-worth.

A 2019 study published in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology found that limiting time on social media leads to improvements in mental health, including reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety. Researchers noted that social media is particularly harmful when users engage in frequent upward social comparisons—when they constantly compare themselves to people they perceive as “doing better.”

CONSUMERISM, SELF-WORTH, AND SOCIAL MEDIA

The intersection of consumerism and social media has created a perfect storm of pressure for individuals to constantly strive for more—more possessions, more experiences, more success. Influencers and brands are not just selling products; they’re selling lifestyles. And it’s easy to feel inadequate when you’re bombarded with messages telling you that you’re not living your best life unless you buy the latest product or adopt the latest trend.
According to a 2020 study in the Journal of Marketing, social media platforms have turned users into consumers in new and complex ways. Advertisements, influencer promotions, and brand-sponsored content are designed to trigger a desire for more, which plays into feelings of dissatisfaction and inadequacy. Social media encourages a “perpetual cycle of wanting”—we are conditioned to believe that purchasing new things will bring happiness and fulfillment, leading to constant consumption.

However, studies also show that material possessions do not lead to long-term happiness. According to psychologist Tim Kasser, materialistic values are linked to lower well-being and greater levels of anxiety and depression. When we place our self-worth on external achievements and possessions, we undermine our intrinsic value. True happiness comes not from fitting into a predefined mold but from finding contentment with who we are and where we are in life, regardless of what anyone else is doing.

THE BOTTOM LINE: IT’S OKAY TO TAKE YOUR TIME

The pressure to achieve, to accumulate, and to perfect our lives is ever-present, but it’s crucial to remember that these external expectations do not define us. Success is not linear, and life doesn’t come with a checklist. There is no universal timeline we must adhere to.

In fact, many people who seem to have everything “figured out” online may be struggling with the same feelings of uncertainty, inadequacy, or pressure that you are. The next time you feel rushed, remember this: You’re not too late. You’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.
