Beach, Please: What Not To Do To Your Skin This Vacation

Yes, you’re glowing—but let’s make sure it’s not from a sunburn

Eid vacation is here, and Sahel is already calling your name. You’ve packed the swimsuits, the playlists are set, and your group chat is already spamming Sahel sunsets. But before you dive into full-blown beach mode, let’s talk skin—specifically, what not to do to it.

We get it: the sun, the sea, the selfies—it’s tempting to go all out. But some vacation habits can seriously mess with your skin, not just now but long after the tan fades. Here’s your list of beach-beauty don’ts, so your post-vacay glow is actually, well, glowy.

SKIP THE RETINOL

If there’s one product you should leave behind this holiday, it’s retinol. While it’s a holy grail for smooth, even skin, it makes your skin way more sensitive to the sun. Mix that with UV rays, and you’re basically inviting sunburn and irritation to your party. Put it on pause—and pick it up again when you’re back to city life and SPF layering.

BABY OIL IS NOT A TANNING OIL

We love a nostalgic throwback—but using baby oil to tan isn’t cute anymore. It offers zero sun protection and literally fries your skin, speeding up damage, dark spots, and early aging. Not to mention the long-term risks. Swap it for a proper SPF-based tanning product—your skin will thank you.

TANNING OIL ≠ FACIAL PRODUCT

Your body might handle a bit of tanning oil (with SPF please!), but your face? Absolutely not. Facial skin is thinner, more delicate, and more prone to breakouts. Slathering thick, pore-clogging oils on your cheeks is a fast-track to sun damage and post-vacay flare-ups. Stick to a non-comedogenic, broad-spectrum sunscreen formulated for the face.

DON’T SKIP SUNSCREEN—EVEN IF YOU’RE “JUST SITTING”

Even if you’re lounging under an umbrella, even if it’s cloudy, even if you just applied it 2 hours ago. Reapply every 2 hours, after swimming, or sweating. Think of sunscreen as skincare’s bodyguard—it needs to stay active.

DON’T SLEEP WITH SALT, SWEAT, OR SPF ON

You may be tired and sun-kissed, but don’t crash without washing your face (and body). Saltwater, chlorine, sweat, and sunscreen build-up can wreak havoc on your pores and barrier. Use a gentle cleanser, followed by a lightweight moisturizer or aloe-based hydrator.

EXFOLIATE… BUT NOT WHILE YOU’RE SUNBURNT

Vacation glow? Great. Red, peeling shoulders? Not so much. If you’ve overdone it in the sun (it happens), don’t exfoliate right away. Scrubbing sunburned skin only increases inflammation. Instead, focus on soothing and hydrating. You can return to exfoliation when your skin calms down.

DON’T FORGET YOUR LIPS

Your lips can burn, too. Look for a balm with SPF and reapply regularly. No one wants cracked, sunburnt lips ruining the Eid selfies.

THE FINAL RULE? DON’T TRY TOO HARD

Vacation is about letting go—not layering on ten active ingredients and baking under the sun. Your skin doesn’t need a complicated routine right now. It needs protection, hydration, and rest—just like you.

Trust us, nothing ruins a good vacation outfit like irritated, flaky skin underneath. So go glow, not burn. Keep it breezy, light, and sun-safe.
