Are MENA Travelers Missing Out on Millions in Flight Compensation?

The winter months might not scream Euro summer, but they come with their own kind of luxury: fewer crowds, better flight deals, and more flexible itineraries. There’s another “deal” many travelers forget entirely, and it’s one that doesn’t show up on booking sites or price alerts: Flight compensation.

Flying is rarely as glamorous as it looks on Instagram. Delays happen, connections get missed, and airport nights stretch longer than planned. What often gets overlooked is that these disruptions aren’t just exhausting, but expensive. In many cases, travelers are actually entitled to financial compensation without ever realizing it. Yes, real money.

WHO ACTUALLY QUALIFIES FOR FLIGHT COMPENSATION

One of the biggest misconceptions among travelers outside Europe is who really qualifies for compensation under European law. Many assume EU air passenger protections apply only to EU citizens, that assumption is wrong.

Anton Radchenko, aviation attorney and founder and CEO of AirAdvisor, explains that eligibility has nothing to do with a traveler’s nationality. “A common misconception is that EU air passenger rights only apply to EU citizens or flights departing from the EU,” Radchenko tells ELLE Egypt. “In reality, EU 261 protects all passengers, regardless of nationality, as long as their flight departs from an EU airport or is operated by an EU-based airline.”

That means travelers from Egypt, across the MENA region and beyond may be eligible for compensation, which is a fact thats often never being told.

WHEN COMPENSATION APPLIES AND WHY TRAVELERS MISS IT

EU Regulation 261 is one of the strongest air passenger protection laws in the world. It covers delayed, canceled, and overbooked flights, and in many cases includes fixed cash compensation on top of refunds or rebooking. According to Radchenko, the most common situation where travelers miss out involves long delays caused by issues within the airline’s control.

Many passengers assume that once they receive a meal voucher, hotel stay, or rebooked flight, the airline’s obligation has been fulfilled. Radchenko says that’s rarely the case. “Travelers often think that if the airline provides a voucher or rebooking, their obligation is fulfilled,” he said. “However, if the delay meets the threshold and isn’t due to extraordinary circumstances — like severe weather, air traffic control strikes, or political instability — they are usually entitled to fixed monetary compensation, up to €600, in addition to rebooking or refunds.”

THE MISSED CONNECTION MOST PEOPLE DON’T REALIZE COUNTS

Missed connections are another commonly overlooked situation. If a delayed first flight causes a traveler to miss a connecting flight booked under the same reservation, compensation may apply to the entire journey, not just the delayed segment.

Radchenko noted that this issue comes up frequently for long-haul travelers. “Another common oversight is missed connections due to a delay on the first leg of a journey, especially when both flights are on the same booking,” he said. “Travelers frequently don’t realize they can claim for the entire disrupted journey.” This is particularly relevant for MENA travelers flying through Europe, where multi-leg itineraries are common.

WHY SO MUCH COMPENSATION GOES UNCLAIMED

The biggest barrier is awareness. Many travelers don’t know the law applies to them. Others expect airlines to proactively inform them, which almost never happens. Some assume the process is too complicated or time-consuming to be worth the effort. “These misunderstandings lead to missed opportunities for rightful claims,” Radchenko said.

WHAT TRAVELERS SHOULD TAKE AWAY

A disrupted flight doesn’t always have to end as a loss. In many cases, it can come with compensation that acknowledges the inconvenience and real cost of the experience. Travel may never be fully predictable, but being informed puts control back where it belongs, with the traveler.

For those curious about whether a past or upcoming flight qualifies, AirAdvisor provides guides and legal support designed to make the claims process clearer and more accessible. Sometimes the smartest travel advice isn’t about where to go next, it’s about knowing what you’re already owed.
